CHARSIAN POETRY

Words have beautiful sounds. Poetry adds sense to these beautiful sounds. Poetry is therefore sound and sense in verse. Poetry touches the heart first before it hits the paper! It is the song of the heart actualized through codified symbols.

CHARSIAN POETRY is a collection of some of the poems I have written in the period of twelve years. It covers a variety of themes ranging from romance to pain, from ecstasy to soul matters, and from political to social issues, in all their complexities. The style employed in the Charsian Poetry has been acquired over a passage of close to ten years. It is a mixture of rhyme and blank in free verse. Charsian Poetry is the exposition of reality. Surrealism has its own place, but a good poem is an input to what transpires in the day to day lives of human beings. It is a contribution to reality. The world is never the same once a good poem has been added.

I love poetry. At the University of Zambia (UNZA) a group of us came together and formed a poetry club. Charles Calder, a Scottish professor of literature and language and a friend  was a huge influence on my development and appreciation of poetry. In 2000 Charles and I directed Elizabethan drama for the British Council (Zambia) and began to influenced a young generation of poets. I hope that everyone reading these poems will enjoy them the way I enjoyed writing them.

Upon settling in Canada, I developed my poetry further. I have written more poems in Canada than I did in Zambia. My appreciation of nature, life and beauty is the motif preeminent in all my poems.

In 2008, I published my first poetry book. Song of an Alien, as the book is called, is divided into five sections referred to as “Books.” Each Book has a number of poems related thematically. Book One is quintessentially romance. Book Two is a spontaneous reaction to lost love, memory and hope. Book Three contains poems dealing with our duty to state, to human rights and, to one another. Book Four is a long narrative poem addressed to the Aushi tribe of Zambia. It is a celebration of libido and the beauty of womanhood. Book Five contains forty songs of an alien, a symbolic character who reflects on moral, political and cultural matters.

My whole life experience has prepared me for poetry-loving and writing. As young school boy, barely seven years of age, I loved picking up paper and write various lines. My brother one time rebuked me because every bit of literature I found I picked up and read. I would grow up with a knack for words and their beautiful construction. By the time I went to Hillcrest Secondary School in Zambia, I had developed a poem collection habit. This would develop further at UNZA where together with Elliot Phiri we co-founded UNZA Poetry Club.

In 2004, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, i began to gather all my poems into one document. At first I entitled the document The Best of Charles, then I realized that, in fact, my best had yet to come. Indeed, my best is yet to come. After publishing Song of an Alien, between January 2008 and September 2009, I have already written over 150 poems. This collection, which I have entitled HEARTCRY, will capture some of the fundamental tenets that have shaped my life in the West. The style has slightly shifted to reflect the trans-cultural nature of my experiences.
